Albuquerque, meet Shanae Eggert
She was born in Albuquerque. She started her career here. And she knows this work from the inside out, not just professionally, but personally. Shanae experienced homelessness as a young person. She found her way through it, and then she made the decision to dedicate her life to making sure others could too.
That commitment took root at Barrett Foundation, where she spent years working with women and children navigating some of the hardest moments of their lives. In 2019, she relocated to Kansas to start her family, where she served as a Continuum of Care and Coordinated Entry Lead Representative. There she wrote grants, built systems, and developed data practices that help communities better serve people experiencing homelessness.
Now she is back in Albuquerque. And she is home.
Shanae joined Heading Home on June 1st as the organization’s new Director of Development. She brings eleven years of nonprofit experience and a Master of Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University. Albuquerque is where this work started for her, and it is where she wants to make her mark.
What This Role Actually Does
Heading Home has not had a dedicated development department. The organization’s revenue has come primarily through grants and contracts, funding that makes the programs possible but does not build the kind of broad community investment that makes an organization resilient over time.
Shanae’s work is to change that. In practical terms, that means building the systems, relationships, and visibility that diversify how Heading Home is funded and known, so that the people of Albuquerque can see, and be part of, what is happening inside these programs every day.
What Comes Next
Over the coming months, Heading Home will show up differently. You will hear more personal stories from the people we serve and from the staff doing this work every day. You will have better information about where resources go and what impact they make. And you will have real ways to get involved, give, and help build something this community needs.
Good development work is built one relationship at a time, one story at a time. That work starts now, one introduction at a time. This is the first one.
Welcome, Shanae!
