Families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Gallup, New Mexico, now have a much-needed place to call home. Heading Home has opened the Lexington Hotel, a 26-unit building that provides private rooms, shared common spaces and case management support!  In 2018, CARE 66—which used the Lexington Hotel for both rapid re-housing and permanent supportive housing—ceased operations. This further reduced affordable housing availability in Gallup. Non-profit capacity was needed to re-open this site.  Heading Home is excited to join the Gallup community!

COVID-19 brought together multiple agencies willing to partner for solutions to house people experiencing homelessness in Gallup. In the short-term, McKinley County funded a wellness hotel to safely quarantine people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 crisis. The County extended that service through January 31, 2021. Meanwhile, the State of New Mexico (through CYFD Sec. Blalock’s office) collaborated with the City of Gallup to purchase the Lexington Hotel to create affordable housing.

During January, Heading Home stood up operations and the City of Gallup completed building renovations. The safe transition of current McKinley County Wellness Hotel occupants has started and will be ongoing. Heading Home is excited to expand 24-hour housing services to meet the needs of those individuals and families who were experiencing homelessness in Gallup.
